Help for parents who did not study the Cambridge curriculum
You do not need to know the subject. You need to know which topic is causing the low strand score, and how to run the right 45-minute practice session. This page explains both.

What is the Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint?
The Cambridge Lower Secondary programme is run by CAIE (Cambridge Assessment International Education) for students in Stages 7, 8 and 9 — roughly ages 11 to 14. At the end of Stage 9, students sit the Checkpoint examination in Mathematics, Science and English as a Second Language. Some schools also run internal Checkpoint-style assessments at the end of Stages 7 and 8.
The Checkpoint is not a pass-fail exam. It produces a detailed feedback report that shows how your child performed on each strand within each subject. That report is the most useful thing you can have as a parent — if you know how to read it.

How to read the strand score report
The most important thing to understand: there is no single overall grade. Your child receives a score from 0 to 6 for each strand within each subject.

A student can score 5.5 in the Number strand but 2.8 in Algebra. These are separate scores. Number being strong does not pull Algebra up. Each strand must be addressed on its own.
What "age-appropriate" means: CAIE sets the 4.0 threshold as the expected standard for students completing that stage. A student at 3.8 in Algebra is close to the threshold; a student at 1.5 in Algebra is significantly behind. Both need targeted work, but the student at 1.5 needs more sessions, not just one booster.
Finding the weak topic inside a low strand score
Each strand on the report contains multiple topics. A low strand score does not mean your child is weak at everything in that strand. It usually means one or two specific topics are pulling the strand score down.
For example, the Mathematics Algebra strand in Stage 8 contains three topics:
- Expressions, Formulae and Equations
- Sequences and Functions
- Graphs
A student with a Stage 8 Algebra strand score of 3.2 might be perfectly fine on Expressions and Equations (a Stage 7 carry-over topic), but struggling on Sequences and Functions specifically. Buying boosters for all three is wasteful. Identifying the one topic causing the low score is the right starting point.
Two ways to find the weak topic:
- Ask your child's school for the question-level breakdown from the most recent test or internal assessment
- Run a 10-minute diagnostic: give your child 4–5 exam-style questions from each topic in the strand, and see which ones they get wrong consistently

How to run a practice session without being a subject expert
You do not need to teach the topic. You need to manage the session and check that your child is following the method. Here is how a 45-minute session works with a CoreMark booster.

Read the parent guide first (5 minutes)
Read it yourself before starting. The guide tells you what the topic is about, what the common mistakes are, and what the correct method looks like. You do not need to understand the maths. You need to know what to look for.

Your child reads the cheat sheet (5 minutes)
Sit with them. Ask them to read it out loud or explain it back to you in one sentence. This is not about testing them — it is to make sure they have actually absorbed the method before they try the questions.

Your child works through the Foundation questions (15 minutes)
No help from you during this step. Let them work independently. Watch for skipped working — that is the most common mistake at Foundation level.

Check the worked solutions together (10 minutes)
Go through each question. The parent guide tells you what the correct working looks like. If your child got the right answer but used a wrong shortcut, that is a mistake too — correct it now, not after the exam.

Standard and Stretch in a second session (next day)
Do not try to do all 20 questions in one sitting. Foundation in session one. Standard in session two. Stretch in session three. Spacing the sessions helps memory more than doing them all at once.
Which topics to buy
The short answer: buy for the strand where your child's score is below 4.0, and only for the topic inside that strand where they are getting questions wrong.

Parent questions
What does a Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint score mean?
The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint scores each student on a 0–6 scale per strand, not one overall grade. A 4.0 or above in a strand is considered age-appropriate by CAIE. A student can score 5.5 in Number but 2.8 in Algebra — these are separate scores, reported separately on the feedback report. The score tells you exactly where to focus practice time.
How do I find out which topic is causing my child's low strand score?
Each strand contains multiple topics. Ask the school for a question-level breakdown, or run a short diagnostic: 4–5 questions per topic in that strand. The topic where your child gets most questions wrong is the weak one. You typically only need to target that topic, not the whole strand.

How many sessions does it take to improve a strand score?
A student who works through all 20 questions in a CoreMark booster across 3 sessions typically improves their topic accuracy by 60–80%. Strand score improvement depends on how many questions from that strand appear on the exam paper, but working through 3–5 boosters targeting the same strand usually moves a student from below 4.0 to above 4.0 in that strand.
Do I need to buy boosters for every topic?
No. Strand scoring exists precisely so you can identify the specific weak topic and work on that. Most students need 2–4 boosters per subject after identifying the gap — not all 88.
What stage is my child in?
Stage 7 roughly corresponds to Year 7 (age 11–12), Stage 8 to Year 8 (age 12–13), and Stage 9 to Year 9 (age 13–14). The Checkpoint examination is typically taken at the end of Stage 9. Some schools run internal assessments at the end of each stage. Check with your child's school to confirm which stage they are currently studying.
Is the free booster the same as a paid one?
Yes, the free Stage 8 Algebra booster is identical in format and content to every paid booster: same cheat sheet, same 20 levelled questions, same worked solutions, same parent guide. The only difference is that it covers one specific topic rather than the topic you need most.
