Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint scores run from 0 to 50. Results are described using four performance bands: Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching, and Below the standard. There is no published percentage threshold for each band — Cambridge sets the cut-scores after each exam series. The score most worth reading on the result sheet is not the 0–50 total but the strand-level subscores, which tell you exactly which topics to target.
When a Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint result arrives, parents often reach for a calculator. The score is out of 50. Naturally the question becomes: what percentage is that? And what percentage did they need?
The calculator will not give you a useful answer, because Checkpoint does not work on a percentage system. Understanding why — and what system Cambridge actually uses — makes the result far more actionable.

The score range: 0 to 50, not a percentage
Since the May 2023 exam series, Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint results in Maths (0862), Science (0893) and Computing (0860) are all reported on a 0 to 50 scale.
This score is not the same as the percentage of raw marks a student got. Cambridge takes the raw marks from across the two papers, runs them through a statistical process called moderation, and converts them to the 0–50 scale. The moderation adjusts for differences in paper difficulty between series — so that a 38 in October 2025 means the same level of achievement as a 38 in May 2026, regardless of which paper happened to be harder.
Why the scale matters
A student who sits a harder-than-usual paper in one series would be unfairly penalised if raw marks were reported directly. Scaling removes this bias. The result is that a score of, say, 32 is a genuine, comparable measure of where that student is — not just a reflection of how hard or easy that particular exam was.
The four performance bands
Every Checkpoint result includes one of four performance band descriptors alongside the 0–50 score. The bands apply to all three subjects and all three stages (7, 8 and 9).
Important: no pass or fail
Cambridge Checkpoint is a diagnostic assessment, not a qualifying exam. A student in the Below band has not "failed" in any formal sense — they cannot be held back or barred from anything on the basis of a Checkpoint result. The bands describe where the student is relative to curriculum expectations, so that the school and family can plan what to work on next.
Why there is no fixed percentage threshold
The most common question parents bring to this topic is: "What percentage do I need for each band?" The honest answer is that Cambridge does not publish one — and for good reason.
After every exam series, Cambridge convenes a standardisation panel of chief examiners. They review that series' papers for difficulty, look at student performance data, and set the minimum scaled score for each band. These boundaries are specific to that series.
What a "good" Checkpoint score actually is
Since there is no fixed percentage target, what should a parent be aiming for? The practical answer depends on what the score is being used for.

Strand-level scores: the most useful number
The 0–50 overall score and the performance band are the headline. But the strand-level subscores are where the actionable information lives.
Each subject breaks down into curriculum strands. For Maths 0862, these include Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measure, Statistics and Probability. For Science 0893, the strands map to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. For Computing 0860, the strands cover Computing concepts, Digital communication, Data handling and Computer systems.
The result sheet reports a subscore for each strand alongside the overall score. Two students with the same overall score of 30 can have completely different strand profiles — one strong in Number but weak in Algebra, another strong in Algebra but weak in Statistics. The revision plan for each is completely different, even though their total scores are identical.

Grading across Stage 7, 8 and 9
The same four-band system applies across all three checkpoint stages, but the content and difficulty expectations differ significantly between them.
Stage 7 Checkpoint covers the first year of Cambridge Lower Secondary. Stage 9 Checkpoint covers all three years and is the one most commonly sat (it is the qualification that bridges into IGCSE). Stage 7 and 8 Checkpoints are sat less often — many schools use internal assessments at those stages instead.
Scores are not comparable across stages
A score of 35 at Stage 7 and a score of 35 at Stage 9 do not represent the same level of achievement. Stage 9 content is harder; the expectations are higher; the grade boundaries are set separately for each stage and series. Always compare results within the same stage.
For most families, the Stage 9 Checkpoint result is the one that matters most, since it is the diagnostic used to plan for IGCSE. If your child sat a Stage 7 or 8 Checkpoint, the result is still useful for identifying strand gaps at that point in the curriculum — but the Stage 9 result is the primary readiness signal for Upper Secondary.
Three common grading myths
A few misconceptions circulate in parent forums and tutoring communities that are worth addressing directly.
Myth 1: "The old scale was better because it gave a percentage"
Before May 2023, Checkpoint reported results on a 0–6 strand scale. That was not a percentage either — it was a different scaled score. The new 0–50 scale is more granular and gives more information, not less. If you see any website, book or score comparison table that still uses the 0–6 scale, it is describing a retired system.
Myth 2: "50/50 means 100% correct"
A scaled score of 50 is the top of the scale, but it does not mean the student answered every question correctly. The scaling process means a perfect raw score across all papers likely maps to a score near 50 — but the relationship is not a direct one-to-one. Chasing a score of 50 is not a useful revision goal. Closing specific strand gaps is.
Myth 3: "My child's school said 35 is Meeting — so that's the cut-off"
A school may informally describe what Meeting looked like in a recent series. But that number will differ in the next series. Using a single past data point as a fixed target leads to misplaced confidence if the paper is harder that year, or unnecessary anxiety if the boundaries shift lower. The band label on the result sheet is the reliable indicator, not a score number a friend or forum mentioned.

Any guide, score table or revision resource that references scores out of 6 is describing the old, retired system.
