What the Checkpoint is — and what it isn't

Cambridge Lower Secondary is a two-part curriculum framework: the programme itself (Stage 7 to Stage 9, covering the teaching and learning sequence) and the optional Checkpoint assessment at the end of Stage 9. The programme is compulsory in schools that use the Cambridge Lower Secondary framework; the Checkpoint exam is not.

Many parents hear "Cambridge exam" and assume it functions like IGCSE or A Level — a high-stakes test with formal grades. Checkpoint is different. Its purpose is explicitly diagnostic: to tell the student, parents, and school where performance sits relative to expected Stage 9 attainment levels, so that any gaps can be addressed before IGCSE coursework begins in Stage 10.

Common confusion

Checkpoint is not an IGCSE and does not produce an IGCSE-style grade. A student who scores 5.5 in Checkpoint Maths has not "passed Maths at IGCSE level." Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint covers three subjects:

Paper format and timing

Each subject is assessed over two papers, each approximately 60 minutes long. The papers are written by Cambridge and marked externally by Cambridge-trained examiners — unlike regular school tests, which teachers mark themselves.

Papers are administered at the school during a set Cambridge examination window, typically in April–May for the end-of-year sitting. Results are released by Cambridge a few weeks later and shared with the school and parents in the form of a detailed strand-level report.

How the 0–6 score works

Cambridge reports Checkpoint results on a 0.0 to 6.0 standardised scale per subject, broken down further into individual curriculum strands. For Mathematics, this means a strand score for Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measure, and Statistics separately — not just one overall Maths number.

The scale is standardised, not a simple percentage. A score of 4.0 does not mean "4 out of 6 questions answered correctly." It means the student's performance places them at a specific point on a scale that has been statistically adjusted to be consistent across different exam papers and different years.
