What happens when a student stops revising everything and targets the gap

CoreMark is a Cambridge Lower Secondary practice resource built around one idea: targeted topic practice closes specific strand gaps faster than mixed revision. This page explains why, and where that idea came from.

Quick answer

Cambridge Checkpoint scores students on a 0–6 scale per strand, not one overall grade. A student below 4.0 in Algebra but above 4.0 in Number has a very specific gap. Working through 3–5 topic-focused boosters targeting that strand typically moves a student from below to above the 4.0 threshold — the level CAIE describes as age-appropriate expectations. Mixed-topic revision does not achieve this efficiently because it distributes time across topics the student already understands.

Why CoreMark exists: the founding case

CoreMark was built by Snehal Patel, a parent of a Cambridge Lower Secondary student at an international school in India. During Stage 7, internal assessments made the gap visible: the child was ahead on Number but behind on Algebra and Geometry. The overall Maths result looked passable. The strand-level picture was not.

Every available practice resource at the time covered everything: thick subject textbooks with no way to skip to one topic, mixed past-paper compilations where 6 of every 20 marks were lost across unpredictable strands, or tutoring sessions that were expensive and still not topic-specific enough to drill one concept to mastery in a single session.

The approach that worked was simpler: take one topic, give the student a one-page reference of every rule and formula for that topic, work through 20 questions at three difficulty levels, then check answers against full worked solutions. One hour per topic. Clear feedback on where the reasoning broke down. No time spent on topics already understood.

That approach did not exist as a product. CoreMark was built to make it one.

How the Cambridge Checkpoint scoring system makes gaps easy to miss

Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint does not give a single overall grade per subject. Each subject is broken into strands, and each strand receives its own score on a 0–6 scale. According to Cambridge Assessment International Education's published guidance, a score of 4.0 or above in a strand indicates a student is working at age-appropriate expectations for that strand.

A student who scores 5.2 in Number and 2.6 in Algebra has a very different revision need than one who scores 3.8 across all strands. But a parent looking at a single Maths result — or a mixed test score — sees neither of those pictures clearly.

The strand score is the diagnostic. The topic booster is the targeted response.

How targeted topic practice produces measurable improvement

Most students below 4.0 in a strand are not weak across every topic in that strand. They are weak on 2–4 specific topics within it. A student scoring 2.8 in Algebra is almost always struggling with one or two of: forming and solving equations, substitution, sequences, or graph interpretation — not all four equally.

Identifying which topics are weak and working through them one at a time produces faster movement in strand scores than reworking the entire strand from a textbook, because the student's time is not distributed equally across concepts they already understand.

What realistic improvement looks like

CoreMark does not publish invented testimonials or grade guarantees. What the product design supports is this: a student with 2–4 specific topic gaps in a strand, who works through the relevant topic boosters systematically, will close those gaps faster than a student doing unfocused mixed revision.

Movement from below 4.0 to above 4.0 in a strand is a realistic outcome for a student whose issue is specific topic weakness rather than broad conceptual deficit. Movement above 4.5 typically requires mixed exam practice on top of topic work — CoreMark is the first step, not the whole revision plan.

The parent guide inside each booster includes score bands that indicate when a student is ready to move to the next topic, so you know when a gap is closed rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Working through 3–5 targeted CoreMark boosters typically takes 3–7 hours of focused practice. Most students scoring below 4.0 in a strand have 2–4 specific topic gaps driving that result. Isolating and closing those gaps is faster than reworking all strand content from a textbook.
Start with your child's most recent school assessment or mock result. Identify the strand where they score lowest — not the overall subject, but the strand within a subject. For Maths, the strands are Number, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Problem Solving. Match that strand to the relevant CoreMark topic boosters. A full textbook distributes attention across all topics — including the ones your child already understands. For a student who is strong on Number but weak on Algebra, a textbook allocates equal time to both. A topic-only booster allocates all practice time to Algebra. The efficiency difference is especially pronounced with 4–8 weeks of revision time before an assessment.
Both. A student below 4.0 in a strand uses CoreMark to close a specific gap before an assessment. A student already at 4.5 uses it to push toward 5.0+ in the strands they want to improve. The Stretch-level questions in each booster are designed for students who have the topic under control and want to push to the top band.
