What is a Cambridge-endorsed resource? And does it matter?

Parents researching Cambridge study materials often come across the phrase "Cambridge-endorsed" and assume it means something mandatory — like a resource you must use to pass Cambridge exams. It does not. Endorsement is Cambridge's own label for third-party materials that have passed their review. Many students succeed with endorsed resources; many others succeed with non-endorsed study aids, textbooks, and practice materials.

What Cambridge endorsement actually means

Cambridge Assessment International Education maintains a list of resources — textbooks, digital platforms, workbooks, and other instructional materials — that it has formally reviewed and endorsed. Endorsement means Cambridge is confident the resource will support teaching and learning of the Cambridge programme or qualification. It is a quality assurance stamp, not a permission slip to study.

Endorsed resources are created by independent publishers (like Hodder, Collins, Oxford, or others), not by Cambridge itself. Cambridge's role is to review them, check that they align with the Cambridge syllabus, and publish a list saying "this material is fit for purpose." That is valuable information — but it is not the only path to success.

How to identify an endorsed resource

If you are shopping for Cambridge study materials, three things signal endorsement:

• Endorsement logo visible: Endorsed resources carry Cambridge's endorsement logo on the front cover or a prominent place on digital platforms. It is not always huge, but it is there.
• Information panel inside: Endorsed resources include an information panel (usually on the back cover or a copyright page) stating which Cambridge syllabus version the resource covers and what type of endorsement it holds (full syllabus coverage or section-specific coverage).
• Official Cambridge list: Cambridge publishes an official endorsed resources list on its website, searchable by subject and qualification level. If a resource claims to be endorsed but does not appear on Cambridge's list, it is not.

The easiest way to verify is to visit Cambridge's endorsed resources page and search by your subject and syllabus code. If the resource is there, it is endorsed. If not, it is not — but that does not mean it is useless.

Do you actually need an endorsed resource?

Cambridge is explicit on this point: "Endorsement of a resource does not mean it is the only suitable material available, that it is an official resource or that it is required to achieve the qualification." Additionally, Cambridge advises that "No particular book is necessary for a course and teachers are advised to choose the textbook that best suits their needs."

This applies equally to families choosing independent study materials. An endorsed textbook is one option. A non-endorsed practice workbook, video series, or online platform can be equally valuable if it covers the Cambridge syllabus accurately. What matters is that the content aligns with what Cambridge tests, not whether Cambridge has formally approved the publisher's branding.

Many excellent study aids are not Cambridge-endorsed:

None of these are Cambridge-endorsed. All of them can help students master the Cambridge curriculum and pass Cambridge exams. Endorsement is a useful signal of quality and alignment, but it is not a requirement.
