The Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint is an optional external examination offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) at the end of Stage 9, typically taken by students aged 11–14. Schools use the results to measure how well students have met the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum across Maths, English, and Science, and to identify readiness for IGCSE.
Unlike many school exams, Checkpoint does not give a single overall grade. Instead, each subject is scored on a 0–6 scale per strand. For example, Maths is reported separately for Number, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Problem Solving. A student who scores 5.5 on Number but 2.8 on Algebra has a very different learning need than one who scores 4.0 across the board. Parents and tutors who rely only on a total score miss these strand-level gaps — and it is exactly those gaps that carry into Stage 10 IGCSE content.
According to CAIE's published guidance, a score of 4.0 or above in each strand generally indicates a student is working at age-appropriate expectations. Scores below 4.0 flag specific curriculum areas that need attention before IGCSE work begins.
The exam covers three subjects: Mathematics (Stages 7–9 content including algebra, geometry, statistics, and problem solving), Science (physics, chemistry, and biology across Stages 7–9), and English (reading, writing, and speaking/listening assessed separately). Computing is not part of the Checkpoint exam, but is part of the Cambridge Lower Secondary curriculum.
Most international schools in India offering the Cambridge pathway hold the Checkpoint exam in April–May of the Stage 9 year. Results are returned to schools only, not published externally. Parents typically receive a student report showing strand-level scores alongside an international benchmark comparison.
