What the Checkpoint score is out of
Since the May 2023 exam series, Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint results in Mathematics (0862), Science (0893) and Computing (0860) are all reported on a scale of 0 to 50. This is a single overall subject score, not a raw paper total.
The old scale is retired
Before May 2023, Cambridge reported Checkpoint results on a 0 to 6 strand-level scale. If you find any website, worksheet, or third-party guide that refers to scores "out of 6" for Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint, it is describing the old system. All results issued from May 2023 onwards use the 0 to 50 scale.
How raw marks become a scaled 0–50 score
A student sitting Cambridge Lower Secondary Maths Checkpoint answers two written papers. Each paper awards raw marks for each question. Cambridge collects those raw marks and converts them to the 0–50 scaled score through a process called statistical moderation.
What scaling means
Scaling adjusts for small variations in difficulty between different exam series. A paper in one year might happen to be slightly harder than the equivalent paper a year earlier. Without scaling, a student who sat a harder paper would be unfairly penalised. The scaled score corrects for this so that a 38 this May means the same level of achievement as a 38 last October.
The practical implication: you cannot reverse-engineer the 0–50 score from raw marks by dividing and multiplying. A student who scores 78 out of 100 raw marks does not necessarily receive a scaled score of 39. The relationship depends on that series' grade boundaries, which Cambridge sets after the exam based on examiner review.
The four performance bands
Every Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint result includes a performance band descriptor alongside the 0–50 score. The four bands are:
Cambridge does not publish fixed score ranges for each band. The cut-scores are determined by the chief examiner and standardisation panel after each exam series, taking into account the specific difficulty of that year's papers. What this means for revision planning
Because band boundaries shift each series, chasing a specific raw target score is not as useful as closing the strand-level gaps that the result sheet identifies. A student who improves on their weakest strands will improve their scaled score regardless of where the bands fall.
What percentage do I need? (the real question parents are asking)
The question "what percentage do I need to pass Cambridge Checkpoint?" is the most common search behind this topic, and the answer requires a reframe of how Checkpoint works.
There is no pass or fail. Cambridge Checkpoint is a diagnostic assessment, not a qualifying exam. A student cannot fail Checkpoint in the way they could fail a GCSE or A-level. The result is a snapshot of where they are in the Cambridge Lower Secondary programme, used by schools and parents to understand which areas need more work before progressing to Upper Secondary.
There is no single percentage target. Because the score is on a 0–50 scale and the band boundaries shift each series, there is no equivalent of "you need 65% to pass". What matters is the performance band and, more specifically, the strand subscores.
That said, schools and parents often use Checkpoint scores to make practical decisions about readiness for Cambridge IGCSE. A student Meeting or Exceeding the standard consistently across strands is generally considered well-prepared. A student Approaching or Below should use the result to identify which specific strand to target, not to convert it to a percentage and compare it to an arbitrary threshold.

Strand-level scores and why they matter more
The 0–50 overall score is the headline number, but the most useful information in a Checkpoint result is the strand-level subscores printed alongside it.
Each Cambridge Lower Secondary subject is divided into curriculum strands. Mathematics 0862 has strands including Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measure, Statistics and Probability. Science 0893 has strands across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Computing 0860 covers Computing concepts, Digital communication, Data handling and Computer systems.

A student who scores 36 overall in Mathematics but has a low Algebra subscore should spend revision time on Algebra specifically, not on general maths practice. The overall score gets them into the Meeting band. The strand score tells them what is holding them back within that band.
How individual marks are awarded on the papers
On the actual exam papers, marks are awarded using a structured mark scheme. Understanding the mark types helps when reviewing your child's practice work.

Why showing working matters
On a typical Checkpoint Maths question worth 3 marks, the breakdown might be M1 (correct method) + M1 (correct intermediate step) + A1 (correct final answer). A student who works through the method correctly but makes a final arithmetic error can still earn 2 out of 3. A student who just writes a wrong number earns 0 out of 3.
